The World of Fallen Aegis: The Final Continent

The World of Fallen Aegis

Unique Genra Blending

Fallen Aegis is a unique Steampunk world. Complex machines function in a logical manner. Form follows function. This is a world undergoing mechanization. Highly advanced mechanical marvels exist, but remain a novelty to the average person outside the extremely wealthy elites and government officials.

Certain mystical elements exist that occasionally turn the understanding we have of technology on its head, but if mastered, open a new world of possibilities…and otherworldly horrors…be careful with that in which you lack understanding…the Pestilence is always looking to deceive.

All is on the table, or maybe under it, where politics are concerned. Fallen Aegis has a complex political system that attempts to prevent open conflict in the midst of disagreements and disputes amongst civilizations…but in the face of dwindling resources…distrust is rampant…is anyone really out to help anyone other than themselves?

The Cardinal System

The Cardinal Knights serve as an international system that attempts to prevent conflict between different civilizations. Their primary role is to protect Spires that serve as the last bastion of civilization and keep the peace by settling regional conflicts before they come to blows...and be ready to trade blows should it come to that.

There are four independent Cardinal Knight factions, one for each major point on the Ring of Spires. Each faction is responsible for maintaining approximately 25% of the habitable land mass in the outer regions. They take their orders from the central territories managed by the Council of Scholars located in the regional capital of Masharaq. Should a territory dispute arise, the Cardinal Knights may present their case before the Council for resolution.

Aside from this federal peace keeping system, independent city-states and regional protectorates are permitted to operate mostly independently as they see fit. Up to and including maintaining an independent local guard who settles civil disputes. This local guard's authority is; however, superseded by the Cardinal Knights and turning a local guard unit against another city-state is considered a capital offense and punishment is swift and harsh.

The Spires

The Spires is a network of towering spikes arranged in a ring that spans an entire continent. There are four major spires located at each of the cardinal directions and smaller ones at regular intervals. The Spires' history is murky at best. They appear to have been activated by the Three Wardens in their final attempt to protect mankind from the Pestilence prior to their disappearance. Their age and purpose is still under debate. Some claiming they were constructed by the Three Wardens and others claiming they existed before mankind itself. At the very least, they appear to have halted the advance of the Pestilence as the lands within their boundary have remained green and vibrant as life has been stripped away from the world beyond them.

The Cardinal Knights work to preserve these Spires based on what little knowledge they possess about them, even going so far as to incorporate the Spires into their outposts and other construction projects for added protection, but despite their efforts for hundreds of years, the Spires are failing. Local governments work tirelessly to hide the severity of the situation from their populations, but their shadow can only cover the direness of the situation for so long. The Knights will soon need to find an alternative to the Spires, or a means to strengthen them, but the options are growing as sparse as the time is short.
